Giving Tree 2019

With Christmas fast approaching, KidsOut are delighted to announce the launch of Giving Tree 2019!

KidsOut’s Giving Tree initiative invites firms to ‘Ditch Secret Santa’ and buy toys for children in local refuge homes instead. Many of the recipients are children who have escaped domestic violence, being forced to flee their homes quickly and leave their possessions behind. Without Giving Tree, these children may not otherwise receive a gift at Christmas.Saffery Champness

Businesses, schools, and organisations can take part by turning their Christmas tree into a special KidsOut “Giving Tree”. In the lead up to Christmas, decorative tags with a child’s name*, age, and suggested gift are placed on the tree, with participants being invited to take a tag and buy the present for £5-£10. KidsOut will arrange the collection of the gifts to distribute to children in local refuges.

Taking part is simple. Here are five easy steps explaining the Giving Tree process:

  1. Sign up on the KidsOut website to order Giving Tree tags for your office
  2. KidsOut will send you tags with a child’s name, age, and suggested toy for you to hang up on your office Christmas Tree
  3. Encourage your colleagues to take a tag and buy the gift
  4. Collect the gifts from your office and deliver them to your nearest collection point
  5. KidsOut will collect the toys from the collection point and distribute them to children in refuge

Now in its sixth year nationally, the Giving Tree initiative has grown tremendously from 63 companies taking part in 2014, to over 750 in 2018. KidsOut is aiming for as many as possible to take part in 2019 to fulfil the aim of every child in a Women’s Aid refuge having the opportunity to receive a present over the festive period.

To quickly sign up, please fill out the short form on KidsOut’s website: www.kidsout.org.uk/givingtree.

At this link you’ll also be able to find a Giving Tree “FAQs” document, explaining the initiative in greater detail and hopefully answering any pressing questions. KidsOut also need companies to act as Collection Points! If you have space to store toys from Giving Tree participants in your local area before they are collected by KidsOut, be sure to contact the team via the link above.

Alternatively, donations can be made by texting the code GIVINGTREE followed by a space and the amount as a number to 70085.** For example, to donate £10 you would text the following to 70085: ‘GIVINGTREE 10’. You can opt to give any whole amount up to £20.

For any further information, please contact the KidsOut Fundraising team on 01525 385 252 or email givingtree@kidsout.org.uk.

If you are already involved in the Giving Tree, please keep the team updated of your office’s contribution on social media – the official hashtags are #GivingTree2019 and #MakeKidsHappy. Simply upload the photos to your social media account, tag the charity at @KidsOut and use the hashtags!

The Giving Tree makes a huge impact, bringing much needed fun and happiness to disadvantaged at Christmas time. One support worker told the team “We were absolutely blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness of your Christmas present donations. It really did MAKE Christmas for our families here at our refuge…   Whatever the type of toy that was given, it provides a sense of ownership – for a child who has left everything behind, having just a single toy to call their own means the world… A gift, given at Christmas, will make them start to realise that the world isn’t such a bad place after all; that there are people in the world that do good things. And that, in my opinion, is the start to their journey of recovery.”

KidsOut is a charity (Reg. no. 1075789) that provides positive opportunities and experiences to enhance the wellbeing and outlook of disadvantaged children, supporting them in becoming well-integrated members of society. Established in 1999, KidsOut has a small team of staff while utilising thousands of volunteers around the UK to achieve its core mission: to bring fun and happiness to those children who need it most. Although based in Bedfordshire, KidsOut provides its services all over the UK to over 50,000 children a year, mainly through the provision of fun days out and Toy Boxes for children being rehomed after refuge.

*Please note the names are fictional to protect the identity of the children in refuge, however all toys donated will go to real children in refuge. The tags are a tool to make sure that we receive toys for a range of ages and genders of children. Any toys that KidsOut are unable to distribute at Christmas time will be used in our ongoing Toy Box scheme throughout the year, for children relocated from refuge.
