What We Do

Building a 21ft Jolly Boat

Projects

Jolly Times

One of our exciting new pilot projects sees us join forces with Oxfordshire Playbus and a youth group in Chipping Norton to build, deliver, and race a 21 ft Jolly Boat in this year's Great River Race.

The project aims to engage young people in a productive and enjoyable activity that provides a long-term diversionary project for those living in rural areas or who find themselves in disadvantaged circumstances.

As well as building a boat, the project is about building the confidence, social skills and team working abilities of young people with challenging lives by giving them a real opportunity to be involved in something special, something fun and something hugely rewarding.

The project is already underway with six 15-year olds from Chipping Norton Youth Centre, who are assembling the boat from flat pack design instructions, and who will be trained to row the boat once finished.

The schedule is for the boat to be built, hand painted, tested and ready to compete in the Great River Race on the Thames at Richmond this September (2006).

The Jolly Boat project is a pilot for us, and - if successful - we will look to offer other similar opportunities for disadvantaged young people throughout the UK.
