What We Do

Walking alongside children rebuilding their lives

KidsOut is a national children’s charity supporting children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

Every year, thousands of children and young people are forced to leave everything behind to escape domestic abuse. Many arrive at a refuge and safe accommodation carrying little more than the clothes they are wearing, having experienced events that no child should ever have to endure. While reaching safety is a vital first step, the impact of abuse often continues long afterwards. As they begin to rebuild their lives, many face ongoing emotional, psychological, and practical challenges and need the right support to recover and look ahead with confidence.

Working alongside refuges, outreach, and community services across the UK, KidsOut aim to ensure children and young people affected by domestic abuse have access to the opportunities, experiences, and support they need to thrive.

We support children and young people on their journeys, through toys, opportunities for play, food and essential items; recycled educational devices, therapeutic experiences, and improvements to refuge environments, we create moments of joy, restore a sense of normality, and help children look to the future with hope.

Creating Fun & Happiness

Each year we take thousands of children out for Fun Days

From wellbeing workshops, theme parks and even a trip to the cinema, all our Fun Days provide children with new and happy memories to cherish and more importantly something to look forward to.

Toys & Toy Boxes

Without KidsOut, many children would have no new toys of their own

KidsOut supports some of the most vulnerable children in the UK including children living in over 650 women’s refuges. The refuges provide safety for women and children who have fled domestic abuse. Many of the children will have witnessed or personally experienced, emotional, violent, or sexual abuse, and will usually arrive in refuge with no possessions.. The charity provides a box of brand-new toys to each often-traumatised child arriving in refuge to help ease their transition into their new home. The toys are carefully chosen by our Children’s Services team based on years of experience with working with families affected by domestic abuse, and children’s mental health experts. For many of the children receiving the toy boxes, it will be the first time they have owned brand-new toys.

At Christmas, KidsOut ensures no child in refuge goes without, with boxes of toys delivered to hundreds of women’s refuges across the UK. The occasion, called The Giving Tree, attracts thousands of individuals and organisations who take part in this now famous event. The Giving Tree asks people to add an extra item to their gift shopping list at Christmas and buy a toy for a child in need. The toys can be dropped off at one of the charity’s many collection points. Alternatively, toys can be bought from KidsOut’s own Fun & Happiness Shop, where the gift purchased will be delivered directly to a child in refuge.

Providing Essential Support

We supply food vouchers for mothers with children living in refuges

We provide food vouchers to families in refuge and those affected by poverty. The vouchers provide a sense of independence for mothers in refuge, as well as helping them during school holidays when school meals are not available.

Enabling Learning & Digital Access

Your surplus tech can change children’s lives

Partnering with Sustainable Tech 4 Good, and its Founder and Ambassador to KidsOut, Sue Gowling, this amazing organisation has provided KidsOut with devices for parents and their children, giving them the tech they need to help them regain their independence.
