The benefits of sensory learning and play

The value of stimulating the senses within an early-learning context is not a new idea. Research within the field of Educational Psychology has told us for some time that children learn best when they are using several or all of their senses at the same time. This is often referred to as direct or ‘whole-body’ learning.

Phyzzpod is designed to give children exactly that; a multi-sensory experience of learning. Learning then becomes more fun, engaging and more effective. Inside a Phyzzpod, children literally feel they are ‘transported’ to the environment they are learning about – be it woodland, a medieval castle, under the sea or even outer space.

Development

In terms of cognitive development, it has been shown to improve speech and language development, communication skills, memory and comprehension.

What is certain is that all children seem to benefit from an environment in which they can bring more of their senses into the learning process.

Behaviour

Less well known is that learning in this way can also dramatically impact childrens’ behaviour, both in and outside the classroom. Teachers have noted improvements in childrens’ emotional stability and behaviour as well as increases in their creativity and participation. Children who are usually quiet and non-participatory in the classroom often respond in dramatically different ways during a session in the Phyzzpod; talking, questioning and really engaging in the learning process. Feedback also suggests that these benefits extend well beyond the Phyzzpod session; spilling over into improved learning and behaviour in the classroom.

OFSTED

In fact, Phyzzpod is such a great learning tool that a recent OFSTED report said:

 “every school should have one”

For a personal account of what it’s like to have a Phyzzpod in your school, read this report (pdf document) from a Head Teacher.
